October 2003 – New from Digital Power, the Salisbury based power supply manufacturer, comes a class leading power conversion “front end” for telecoms and cellular infrastructure applications. Strongbox is the first product of this type to offer 1,800 watts of 48VDC power from a single 1U, 19” rack unit with options for full redundancy, hot-swap and battery back-up. Each Strongbox hub can hold up to three modular power converters from a range of over 20 different configurations. Universal input AC types with power factor correction and DC input modules with either 36 – 72 VDC or 18 – 32VDC input ranges are available. The AC input modules offer standard single output voltages of 48, 24 or 12VDC all at 600 watts output. These may be configured to provide a full 1800 watts of output power or in N+1 or N+2 redundant format. Other AC input models are available for rectifier/battery charging use or battery back-up operation and microwave transmitters. Two other AC input modules provide “hot-swap” capability with outputs of either dual 5VDC or for telecom applications triple outputs of 3.3, 5 and 12VDC. The Strongbox system offers very low output noise and meets EN55022 class B and FCC 68 part 15 and is fully safety agency approved and CE marked. All modules are fully protected against overload, short circuit, over-temperature and over-voltage and the system will operate without power de-rating over the range 0 to 50°C. An optional I2C data bus may be specified and Strongbox hubs may be connected in parallel for higher system power. Strongbox can save space in equipment rooms, allowing installation of additional line and control equipment and bringing system builders significant cost benefits.
